PART 2 - THE PUEBLO RUINS.....MAY 05 2012
By the time we left the Volcanic part of the Monument, the rain had stopped, the sun was shining, but the wind was blowing like crazy.
We followed the map driving on through the National Monument and were fortunate enough to see 4 of the 5 ruins.
So many of the ruins, when abandoned for some unknown reason, belongings (pottery, personal items, primitive tools and weapons) were left behind, as if they intended to return.
What happened? I guess we will never know.
The first we arrived at were the WUKOKI ruins. This was part of an ancient pueblo community within the Wupatki National Monument. These ruins were inhabited by the SINAQUA Indians from about 1100 AD until 1250 AD. Amazing the ruins are still standing, and some in as good a condition as they are.
Secondly, were the CITADEL Ruins, not a lot left of this particular area. At one time the Citadel housed 30 rooms and resembled a fortress at the top of a hill.
Third, were the NALAKIHU PUEBLO ruins. The only information I could find on this particular ruins was that the word Nalakihu was Hopi for House Standing Outside of the Village.
Last were the LOMAKI PUEBLO ruins, located about half a mile beyond the Citadel. How different the architecture and stones used were. It is too bad there is not more history concerning these ruins.
From there we drove on to Page, checked in to our motel, and went out for dinner, - we were definitely hungry.
Spent the evening driving around Page, out to Lake Powell and the dam.
The saga will continue, hope you are enjoying your history lesson, and will tune in for the next episode. In the meantime, enjoy your weekend and God Bless.
