WHAT DO YOU KNOW?...DECEMBER 03 2011....

About the Market House in Wheeling?  I was there last night as the Artworks Around Town Studio Gallery held a Gallery Hop and Exibition Reception, featuring the paintings of my friend, Georgia Dangel, and four other artists.

This is the cover of Georgia's art book, as published by Hummingbird World Media.  It contains pictures, and descriptions, of her various paintings.

The Gallery is located in one of the historical sections of Wheeling.  At one time there were three market houses on, can you imagine, Market Street.  The Upper Market, Centre Market, and Lower Market.

Coleman's Fish Market is in the Lower Market House, the Art Gallery in Centre Market House.

Centre Market was built in 1853, and is older than the state itself. The Upper Market was the oldest market house in the country, and built as an open-air market.  I haven't found a date for the Upper Market as of yet.  The Lower Market was built in 1891 and houses a mix of shops and dining.

I remember the Upper Market, which is no longer in existence.  It was on Market Street, just below the old Stone and Thomas building.  It was still in use when I was a teenager.  We would take, at one time the trolley, later the bus, to Wheeling for shopping, and as the main shopping area of Wheeling was at the upper end, that is the Market House we would visit.  the area where it once stood is now a grassy park-like area.

This picture courtesy of Wheeling's web-site, is of Centre Market area.

It is hard to believe how much history there is connected to Wheeling and the surrounding area.  In fact three of my favorite books were written by Zane Gray, the first entitled BETTY ZANE, who was born, and is buried, in Martins Ferry Ohio.  She was the historical person that  help save Fort Henry in Wheeling during one of the Indian attacks.  The three volume series tells about Fort Henry, the Zane family, some famous, and infamous, people of that time frame.

Better sign off and get soup a'cookin'.  Won't be long until the very cold hunters will be coming in for something hot to eat and drink.  Have heard gun shots, so imagine someone will get something.

In the meantime stay warm, maybe make some soup, and God Bless.
